There are to 3 ways to communicate from your PC to your Dreambox:

- serial, via a null-modem cable
- network, via a standard UTP cable
- direct UTP, via a cross-over cable

Null-modem cable:

A null-modem is a cross cable. Judging by a 9 pins connector on both sides of the cable, must be configured as follows:

FG (Frame Ground)	1	X	1	FG
TD (Transmit Data)	3		2	RD
RD (Receive Data)	2		3	TD
RTS (Request To Send)	7		8	CTS
CTS (Clear To Send)	8		7	RTS
SG (Signal Ground)	5		5	SG
DSR (Data Set Ready)	6		4	DTR
DTR (Data Terminal Ready)	4		6	DSR

A null-modem cable is an absolute must. Even if you probably mainly communicate by the UTP network with your Dreambox. When there ever something goes wrong and you must flash your Dreambox again because it won't no longer wants to boot, then it is only possible with a null-modem cable.

Furthermore you need Telnet or a another communication package for serial communication. You can directly serve your Dreambox with Linux commandos.

A standard RJ-45 UTP networkcable:

If you have a network on the basis of UTP wiring (also CAT-5 wiring called), then you can simply connect your Dreambox by laying a UTP cable from your hub/switch/router to your Dreambox. A standard RJ-45 UTP cable is configured as follows:

Orange/White	1	1	Orange/White
Orange	2	2	Orange
Green/White	3	3	Green/White
Blue	4	4	Blue
Blue/White	5	5	Blue/White
Green	6	6	Green
Braun/White	7	7	Braun/White
Braun	8	8	Braun

You absolutely need FTP software to copy software to your Dreambox.

Furthermore there are lots of Windows software to u se for updates, extensions and modifications. The uploading is incorporated in that software. Also for that I refer you to the FAQ pages here on Sjerom.

Cross-over cable:

If you have no network, but only your PC who is equipped with a network card, then you can connect it to the Dreambox by using a cross-over cable. You don't need no hubs or switches or other kind of additional network hardware. Just ordinary one cable directly from your PC to your Dreambox.

A cross-over cable is a special type UTP cross cable. These cables are also called patchcables and are configured as follows:

Orange/White	1	3
Orange	2	6
Green/White	3	1
Blue	4	4
Blue/White	5	5
Green	6	2
Braun/White	7	7
Braun	8	8

Regarding to the software possibilities considered above they are the same as described for the Dreambox in a network.
