As described on the "Dreambox for Dummies" page, Enigma is the name of the graphic interface for the Linux operating system of the Dreambox.

Those who work already longer with PC's, remind themselves perhaps still Windows 3.x (and older). In that time Windows was not the real operating system, but MS-DOS were. Windows were then also a graphic interface of the MS-DOS which simplifies the use. In fact enigma is therefore for Linux what Windows 3.x were for MS-DOS.

If your Dreambox is prohibited with the original Dream multimedia software, and also the skin is not modified, then to see you the name enigma always standing as soon as you call the main menu. On a standard Dreambox without only acquired characteristic the main menu looks likes this way:

On the left bottom you'll see the Enigma logo.

Enigma is an Open Source Project:

As your possibly knows, Linux is an Open Source project. That means that the sources are rather free to download. Everyone whom wants, can download for free all resources and adapt them to thier own insight. In principle applies that also for the enigma project. That seems very beautiful and that is it in principle also, but only under certain conditions.

Since everyone can download the sources and rebuilt it as much as he wants, a lot of people work for the same software project without there are some forms of harmonisation concerning which what does. You would expect thus that much of those adapted mutually versions not always (uncomplicated) work together [b]And that is right.[/b ] Do not assume that an adapted Enigma version will work without problems.

Some of the builders of alternative images set limits to building loose modules which can work independently. In that case nothing is therefore changed to the operating system or Enigma. There are however also people who much go further. Those rebuilt the Enigma system. Do not look strange as some of those alternative images are not stable.

But before the tale becomes already too technical, I refer you rather to the German-speaking Enigma Internet site (http://its.no-enigma.de) when you are interested in this. A more thoroughly knowledge of Enigma is for the functioning and structuring of the Dreambox not really substantial important.
