How to patch a new firmware (image) in my Dreambox? (Flashing Image)

If you want to hobby with your Dreambox it is better to have a netwotkconnection. You can do it by serial, but it's very slow and it need alott of steps. If you can't or won't have a networkcable to your box you can think about a wirelessconnection.

When you have a networkconnection, you don't need a serial connection anymore. You just need it when your box won't boot anymore. So don't throw the serial cable away, you may need it sometime!!!

It is possible to flash your Dreambox on several ways:
- flashing via a serial connection
- flashing via an UTP connection
- flashing manual
- flashing by internet

I will handle these methods.

Flashing Serial:
For this you need a null-modem cable. A null-modem kabel is a crosscable. On the page  Communication,  you'll find the diagram. Further you need the DreamUp software.

Flashing via UTP:
If you want to flash via an UTP connection, your Dreambox must be connected in a network. It's also possible to do it via a cross-over cable. On the page Communication, you'l find the diagram of a cross-over cable. or flashing via UTP you'll need the DreamupLAN software.

Flash by hand:
This means that you use the networkconnection (or cross-over cable) to FTP the image to your Dreambox and to flash it manually.

When you have an UTP-connection between your PC and Dreambox, do the following:

- rename the image into root.cramfs (in small letters)
- copy this root.cramfs with a FTP-software to your Dreambox in the subdirectory /var/tmp
- push on the Dream button on your remote control to get into the Enigma menu
- Go to the Setup menu and choose the Expert Settings
- Now choose Software Update

You will see 2 possibilities:
- Internet Update
- Manual Update

Now you choose the last option (Manual Update).

The Dreambox is now looking for your /var/tmp/root.cramfs file and when it is found flashing starts.

Flashing by Internet:
This method is meant for updating the original Dream Multimedia images. For some alternative firmware (images) it is also possible to use!

But when you have a problem with your internetconnection you also have a problem flashing your box!

Heres how to do it:
- push on the Dream button on your remote control to get into the Enigma menu
- Go to the Setup menu and choose the Expert Settings
- Now choose Software Update

You will see 2 possibilities:
- Internet Update
- Manual Update

Now you choose the Internet Update option and you see a list of the (original) Dream-Multimedia images to choose from. The last new version is on top. Choose the wanted update and the Dreambox starts flashing.

Flash erase:
When the flashing is ready, it is neccesary to do a flash-erase. With a flash-erase you erase old settings on the Dreambox. I recommed to do always a flash-erase!

A flash erase is very easy via the 3 buttons on your Dreambox:

- When you see the bootlogo on your TV you need to press the Channel Up button untill you see the message: Flash Erase in the LCD screen

How to use DreamUp?

1) The First thing you need to do is to connect the receiver (DreamBox) to the PC using a COM-Cable most of the times COM1.

2) To speed up the flashing you should connect the UTP-Cable as well (Remember you also need to connect the 2 with the Com Cable)

3) Turn off the Receiver.

4) Start the programme "Dreamup" (choose the correct Com-port).

5) If you connected the PC and the DreamBox with a UTP-Cable as well you need to enter the IP adress of the machines.
To see what the IP adress is of your local Computer go to Dos and enter IPCONFIG.
The difference between the IP adres of the PC and the DreamBox are the last 3 digits. (1 till 254).

6) Press Connect.

7) Turn on you DreamBox, You will now see the text "ok, uploading".

8) After this you need to press Flash, the windows asks you to select the image to upload, do this and press open. When loading doesn't start at the first time, selct the image the second time, now it will start loading! This will take about 10 seconds with UTP-Cable and 10 minutes without UTP-Cable. The first text is "Uploading", then "Erasing" and next "Flashing". Final you will get the following message:

9) Press "Ok" and reboot the DreamBox, if this fails with the Standby Button press all three buttons on the front. When booting you need to press the Channel Up button untill you see the message: Flash Erase in the LCD screen.

The settings will be reset and you DreamBox is ready to use. Remember you need to re-input all settings!
